How Do You Choose a Clear Ice Block Machine? Batch Capacity, Freezing Time, and Block Type Explained

Transparent Ice Block Machine for Making Edible Ice with Drinking

  • Clear ice block machines should be specified by batch capacity, freezing time, and holding time — not by a single "tons per day" number.
  • BAOCHARM's BCTM-3T and BCTM-6T are different capacity models — 3 tons and 6 tons per batch — not daily output ratings. Both can be configured for solid or center-hole blocks.
  • As a reference, a 3-ton batch takes about 22 hours freezing for center-hole blocks and about 44 hours for solid blocks, plus about 2 hours holding — the stabilization period before demolding — in both cases. The 6-ton model uses additional molds to complete a 6-ton batch in a comparable timeframe.
  • Solid vs center-hole is a yield decision, not a quality decision. Both meet the same visual standard; the hole shortens the cycle but removes volume that would otherwise become saleable ice after cutting.
  • The right selection question is not "which machine is bigger," but how many batches fit your production schedule and cutting plan.

Why is "tons per day" the wrong starting point for clear ice?

A clear ice machine's output depends on batch capacity, freezing time, holding time, and how batches are scheduled across days and weeks. A single "tons per day" number collapses those variables into one figure and hides the real production rhythm. For clear ice, the batch cycle is long enough that the scheduling assumption changes the answer substantially.

In standard block ice, a short cycle makes "tons per day" a reasonable shorthand. In clear ice, it is not. A 3-ton solid batch at roughly 44 hours freezing plus 2 hours holding does not complete once per day. A 3-ton center-hole batch at roughly 22 hours plus 2 hours is close to a 24-hour rhythm. Two machines with the same nominal capacity can therefore produce very different monthly output depending on block type and scheduling.

This is why BAOCHARM rates its clear ice machines by batch capacity — 3 tons or 6 tons per batch — and states freezing time and holding time separately.

Figure 1: Batch capacity vs daily output — the same nominal capacity produces different monthly output depending on block type and batch scheduling.

How do you calculate realistic output from batch capacity?

Start with the freezing time and holding time for your chosen block type, add the handling time between batches, and divide your available production hours by the total cycle. That gives you the number of batches per period, which you multiply by the batch capacity to get realistic output.

The calculation has four inputs:

  • Batch capacity — 3 tons or 6 tons per batch.
  • Freezing time — about 22 hours for center-hole blocks and about 44 hours for solid blocks in BAOCHARM's 3-ton configuration.
  • Holding time — about 2 hours in both cases.
  • Handling time between batches — demolding, mold preparation, and refilling.

A worked example for a 3-ton center-hole batch:

Step Value
Freezing time Approx. 22 hours
Holding time Approx. 2 hours
Handling time between batches Site-dependent; assume 1–2 hours for planning
Total cycle per batch Approx. 25–26 hours
Batches per 7-day week (assuming continuous operation) Approx. 6–7
Weekly output at 3 tons per batch Approx. 18–21 tons

Handling time depends on the level of automation, mold count, and site layout. The 1–2 hour figure is a planning assumption, not a machine specification.

The same calculation with a solid block batch changes the picture: 44 hours freezing plus 2 hours holding plus handling puts the cycle at roughly 47–48 hours, which is about 3–4 batches per week and roughly 9–12 tons weekly at 3 tons per batch.

The buyer can see the production rhythm before committing, rather than comparing a "3-ton machine" and a "6-ton machine" as if both produce that amount every day.

Figure 2: Worked example — 3-ton center-hole batch at ~25–26 hours total cycle yields roughly 6–7 batches per week under continuous operation.

Solid or center-hole: which block type should you choose?

Choose solid blocks when usable yield after cutting is the priority and the longer cycle fits your schedule. Choose center-hole blocks when the shorter cycle matters more and the hole does not conflict with the final cut pieces. Both meet the same transparency standard; the difference is the freezing path and the volume of saleable ice.

Selection factor Solid clear ice block Center-hole clear ice block
Block form Solid throughout Through-hole along the long axis
Standard block weight Approx. 50 kg Lower than a solid block of the same dimensions
Freezing time per 3-ton batch Approx. 44 hours Approx. 22 hours
Holding time Approx. 2 hours Approx. 2 hours
Blocks per 3-ton batch Approx. 64 Depends on mold configuration
Transparency standard No white core, no bubbles, no cracks Same standard
Usable yield after cutting Higher — no volume removed by a hole Lower — the hole removes volume that could become saleable ice
Best fit Buyers who cut blocks into large pieces and can accept the longer cycle Buyers who need a shorter cycle and whose cutting plan tolerates the hole

Usable yield is the row most often misread. Large clear blocks are usually cut into smaller pieces — cubes, spheres, Collins spears — before they reach the end customer. A center hole removes volume that would otherwise become part of those cut pieces.

A bar that cuts blocks into spheres may find the hole conflicts with the cutting plan. A distributor that resells full blocks may find the shorter cycle more valuable than the lost volume.

What should you ask a supplier before choosing a model?

Ask for batch capacity, freezing time, holding time, block type options, standard block weight, blocks per batch, mold material, compressor brand, refrigerant, and electrical configuration.

The questions fall into three groups:

Production planning

  • What is the batch capacity, and is it stated per batch or per day?
  • What is the freezing time and holding time for solid and center-hole blocks?
  • How many blocks per batch, and what is the standard block weight?
  • Can the mold be customized, and how does a custom size affect the cycle?

Equipment specification

  • What material is the ice mold, and what material is the frame?
  • What compressor brand is standard, and what alternatives are available?
  • What refrigerants are supported?
  • What electrical configuration is required, and can it be customized?

Transparency and acceptance

  • How is transparency defined and verified?
  • What is the acceptance standard for white core, bubbles, and cracks?
  • Does the same standard apply to center-hole blocks?
  • What project references are available in similar applications?

BAOCHARM's answers: aluminum alloy ice molds, stainless steel frame, Bitzer as standard compressor with Refcomp and Hanbell available, R404A and R507 supported, electrical configuration customized to the destination market, and a visual transparency standard of no white core, no bubbles, and no cracks. The standard solid block is approximately 50 kg, with about 64 blocks per 3-ton batch and 128 per 6-ton batch.

How does the 6-ton model differ from the 3-ton model?

The 6-ton model is a different capacity model, not a doubled 3-ton machine. It completes a 6-ton batch in a comparable timeframe by using additional molds, rather than extending the freezing cycle proportionally.

A buyer comparing "3 tons" and "6 tons" might assume the 6-ton model simply takes twice as long per batch. It does not. The 6-ton model uses additional molds so that the larger batch completes in a comparable timeframe. The freezing time for a given block type remains the governing variable; the mold count scales with the batch capacity.

The 6-ton model fits projects that need a larger batch per cycle without pushing the cycle length beyond what the production schedule allows. The block type decision — solid vs center-hole — applies to both models in the same way.

FAQ

Q: Is a 3-ton clear ice machine the same as a 3-ton-per-day machine?

A: No. The 3-ton figure is batch capacity. The daily output depends on freezing time, holding time, handling time, and scheduling.

Q: How many blocks are in a batch?

A: In BAOCHARM's standard configuration, a 3-ton batch of solid 50 kg blocks is approximately 64 blocks, and a 6-ton batch is approximately 128 blocks.

Q: Can I switch between solid and center-hole blocks on the same machine?

A: BAOCHARM's BCTM-3T and BCTM-6T are different capacity models, and both can be configured for either block type. The configuration is set at the mold and process level.

Q: Does a custom block size change the freezing time?

A: Yes. Block size and thickness affect the freezing path, so a custom size will have a different cycle from the standard 50 kg block.

Q: What is the standard block weight?

A: Approximately 50 kg for a solid block. Center-hole blocks are lighter than a solid block of the same dimensions.

Q: Can the machine run continuously?

A: The machine can run repeated batches, but the schedule depends on the total cycle time, including handling between batches.

The model is only half the decision; the application decides the rest.

How the block is cut, displayed, or resold determines the block type; the application groups are covered next.
